VA Highlands Shinrin-Yoku

The Garden Story
THE BRIEF

-
Remove all the existing problem plants that had gotten out of control
-
Native plant infill for the newly cleared spaces, keeping existing mature trees and shrubs
-
Stormwater flooding, mosquitoes, and rabbit solution in the back
-
New path that is weed free and safe for walking
-
Plants with ample seeds for birds who visit the many birdhouses in the back
-
Clean curb appeal in front with lots of color, despite shady conditions
-
As low maintenance as possible for very occasional gardening
THE FUNCTION
We added water source to the front for birds. We added a plant palette that is deterrent to both rabbits and mosquitoes, and used water loving rain garden plants in the back where it floods. We used a rockery to slow the existing stormwater drain from flooding onto the site. We added a large patio area in the back for seating, alongside a new large path throughout, that is permeable and low maintenance. We added various bird favorite plant species that are shade tolerant for lots of color.
THE LOOK
Bright, bold colors with extensive shades of green and texture mixes to suit the arts and crafts style home. The back garden will fill in to 3' tall with a forest bathing feel with a paved area for lounging. The front garden came with a beautiful potted Japanese maple, so we added some other japenese style elements like water, texture, stone, and ground level plantings and we reflected the tree with a Japanese style bird bath placed on circular stones.
