The Quiet Power of Native Grasses

As summer softens into autumn across the Southeastern Piedmont, native grasses step forward. They provide architectural movement, drought resilience, and crucial winter bird habitat—creating living, textured tapestries that endure long after perennials fade.

 

Native ornamental grasses may be some of the most underused plants in Southeastern gardens. Underrated and overlooked, they've always been our worst sellers because people tend to think first about flowers when designing for color, pollinators, and seasonal interest, but grasses do something flowers cannot: they create the structure that holds a naturalistic garden together.


In fall, they become the stars. Backlit by the low autumn sun, their seedheads glow and move in the wind. Their greens fade into copper, bronze, gold and russet just as asters, eupatoriums, helianthus and heleniums reach their peak. A garden planted this way doesn't simply have fall color; it catches light, moves and changes throughout the day.

The Piedmont Wasn't Always a Wall of Trees

 

One reason native grasses can look so completely at home in Southeastern landscapes is that they belong to a much older landscape story. We often imagine the Piedmont before modern development as continuous dense forest, but its historical ecology was considerably more complicated. Prairies, savannas, open woodlands and forests formed a shifting landscape influenced by soils, grazing, natural disturbance and Indigenous land management.


Historical research by Barden (1997) documented numerous accounts from European explorers and traders between 1540 and 1750 describing prairie-like openings across the Carolina Piedmont, some reportedly extending for many miles. Barden concluded that Indigenous burning and agriculture were important forces in creating and maintaining these landscapes. So when we plant little bluestem, Indiangrass and switchgrass in a Piedmont garden, we aren't necessarily importing a Midwestern aesthetic. In many ways, we are remembering a Southeastern one.


 

Grasslands deserve more attention in the climate conversation, too. Unlike trees, which store enormous quantities of carbon above ground in trunks and branches, perennial grasslands store much of their carbon below ground in extensive root systems and soils. That distinction may become increasingly important as drought, heat, and wildfire become more commonplace.

 

A recent study from the University of California suggested that grasslands can sequester more carbon than trees, but the science is more nuanced. Research by Dass et al. (2018) found that under projected twenty-first-century climate conditions in California, grasslands could become more reliable carbon sinks than forests. The grasslands' advantage came partly from storing carbon underground, where it is less vulnerable to rapid loss from wildfire, and less need for evapotranspiration.

 

Increasing drought, heat and fire threatened forest carbon storage much more severely in the study's projections.


That research concerns California, so its results should not simply be extrapolated directly to Georgia. However, it raises an increasingly relevant question for a drought-stressed Southeast: should grasslands play a much larger role in how we think about climate-resilient landscapes?

When is a Wildflower Meadow a Wildflower Meadow?



We can't not talk about meadows when we talk about grasses, and this brings us to something happening much closer to home.

 

In Georgia, DeKalb County and GDOT deserve a lot of credit for experimenting with meadow planting on public land. Moving municipal landscapes away from frequently mown turf and toward flowering grasslands is exactly the kind of change we should be encouraging. But these projects also demonstrate an important lesson: a meadow and a native meadow are not the same thing. If you've seen our designs at BBG, you'll know we're not native purists, but if you care about where your tax dollars go, you'd rather they were spent on ecological support, climate resiliency, and beautification.

And guess what? Native species have the trifecta.

 

Where meadow seed mixes include non-native grasses and forbs, the resulting planting may still provide flowers, cover, reduced mowing and some resources for wildlife, and it may be considerably preferable to maintaining acres of conventional lawn grass. But that does not necessarily make it the ecological equivalent of a locally appropriate native grassland. Increasingly, research is helping us understand why.

 

Data on Ecological Support - Non-Native vs. Native

 

A 2024 systematic review by Tartaglia and Aronson examined 165 studies concerning native and non-native plants in urban horticulture. The authors found overwhelming evidence that native plants support greater faunal abundance and diversity than non-native plants in urban landscapes. Native plants also generally supported a greater range and level of ecosystem services (Tartaglia and Aronson, 2024). Earlier research by Burghardt, Tallamy, and Shriver (2009) reached a similar conclusion from another direction. Landscapes with greater native plant cover supported significantly more caterpillars and caterpillar species, along with greater native bird abundance, diversity, species richness and breeding populations. Burghardt and Tallamy (2010) subsequently found that non-native plants reduced the abundance, richness ,and host specialization of Lepidoptera communities. This matters because caterpillars are not simply another biodiversity statistic. They are one of the major pathways through which plant energy moves into terrestrial food webs. Research by Narango, Tallamy and Marra (2018) demonstrated how those differences can move further up the food chain. Their study of Carolina chickadees found that landscapes dominated by non-native plants provided fewer suitable insect resources, with consequences for the birds' population growth. The relationship between native plants, insects, and birds is therefore not simply theoretical; changing the vegetation can change the ecological relationships above it.

 

Data on Climate Resiliency - Non-Native vs. Native

 

Native meadows can offer an important advantage as our climate becomes hotter and droughts become more frequent and severe. A 2025 meta-analysis of 66 peer-reviewed grassland studies found that introduced plant species were, on average, 25.9% more negatively affected by drought than native species, suggesting that drought can shift the competitive balance toward native plants. Long-term research has also documented substantial resilience among native perennial grass communities exposed to decades of warming and climate variability, although even native communities can eventually be pushed beyond their limits by increasingly severe drought. Importantly, resilience is not simply a matter of whether a plant is labeled “native”; species diversity and the ecological suitability of the entire plant community matter as well. Research on grassland drought recovery has found that greater functional diversity can help communities maintain ecosystem function when individual species are stressed. (ScienceDirect) For this reason, a thoughtfully designed native meadow—using a diverse community of plants adapted to the local soils, hydrology and climate—can be more than an attractive alternative to turf or a conventional ornamental planting: it can be a landscape designed to withstand and recover from some of the environmental stresses we increasingly expect in the Southeast.

 

This is why creating something that looks like a wildflower meadow and reconstructing a functioning Southeastern native plant community are two very different ambitions. Species selection, plant community, soil, hydrology, seed origin, provenance, and long-term management all matter. Most importantly, the evolutionary and ecological relationships between those plants and the organisms around them matter.

 

That doesn't mean we should criticize municipalities for trying; quite the opposite. Their willingness to rethink acres of routinely mown public land is really encouraging. The first and perhaps hardest step is recognizing that our public landscapes can become something more than turf. The opportunity now is to take the next step by involving native plant design specialists, restoration ecologists, certified horticulturists, and experienced native growers early enough to help determine what is planted and what ecological community is appropriate for each site.

 

We have an extraordinary opportunity in the Piedmont to reduce mowing, create beautiful public landscapes, improve resilience to drought, provide habitat for insects and birds....the list goes on.

 

Perhaps, piece by piece, we can even restore some of the grassland character that once belonged to this region. But there is a profound difference between planting a meadow that looks wild and rebuilding a living ecosystem that actually functions as one.

6 Great Reasons to Use Ornamental Grasses

1. Drought Tolerance

Many of our Southeastern native warm-season grasses are extraordinarily well adapted to summer heat and periods of drought. Little bluestem, for example, thrives in dry, well-drained and even relatively poor soils. Instead of trying to maintain a permanently lush, irrigated landscape, grasses give us another option: designing with plants adapted to the conditions we actually have.


2. Curating Wildness

There is a difference between a garden looking wild and a garden looking neglected, and grasses help bridge that gap. Repeated drifts of grasses provide a visual framework through which flowering perennials can emerge. They allow us to borrow the character of a meadow or prairie while still making the landscape feel deliberate and designed. The grass is often what makes the wildness legible.


3. Wildlife Habitat

Native grasses aren't simply ornamental. Their foliage, stems, roots, and seeds create living habitat, providing shelter, nesting material, and food while contributing to the larger plant communities on which insects depend. Leaving grasses standing through winter until temperatures begin to rise in spring allows the garden to continue functioning long after the flowers have disappeared. Research comparing native-dominated and conventionally landscaped properties has found greater caterpillar abundance and diversity, as well as greater native bird abundance, diversity, and breeding populations, in landscapes with more native vegetation.


4. Movement

A shrub stays where you put it, but a grass performs. Even a slight breeze changes the garden as stems bend, seedheads sway, and sunlight flickers through them. This movement is one of the easiest ways to make a planting feel alive. It is also one of the defining characteristics of meadows and prairies, and something conventional foundation planting rarely achieves.


5. Extraordinary Fall Light

Perhaps the most beautiful reason to grow grasses is light. Autumn sun arrives lower in the sky, passing through translucent seedheads rather than simply falling onto foliage. Plumes become illuminated from behind, particularly in the morning and late afternoon. A mass of native grass positioned where the setting sun can pass through it can become one of the most dramatic features in the entire fall garden.


6. Soft Fall Color

Fall color doesn't have to mean a blazing red maple. Grasses give us quieter colors of straw, champagne, silver, cinnamon, copper, burgundy, and bronze, and against those muted tones late-season flowers become even more intense. Think violet and blue asters rising through copper grasses, white Eupatorium floating above bronze foliage, and golden Helianthus and yellow Heleniums appearing between shimmering seedheads. This is where native grasses stop being background plants and become part of the color palette.
